Adult acne is a common skin condition characterized by areas of scaly red skin, blackheads, whiteheads, pustules, pimples and possibly scarring. Approximately 40 to 50 million Americans have acne, and it can occur at any age. Research revealed four key players- excess oil, clogged pores, bacteria and inflammation. Sebum is an oily substance produced by the skin’s sebaceous glands, which may contribute to acne breakouts. For some adults, breakouts are a result of hormonal abnormalities. For women, this can happen during pregnancy, and menopause. Some medications, such as corticosteroids, and cosmetics can also contribute to the development of acne.
